Hello Island Dancer VIA Puerto Rico !!!

Made it to Puerto Rico!!!   Miss Island Dancer very happy at San Jaun Bay Marina

Very cool island.. its a huge holiday.. tonight at midnight they entire island (well most of em)…  swim in the ocean 3 times and wish for ???    Anyway..  not sure we will make it that late.. doing a hull out at 8am on island dancer..  havin a wee look at her bottom side…
Out for a sail today we entered the ocean at 7.6 knots under full sail..  some very nice swells which she found a seemingly natural environment..  Sir Auto Van Helm took the wheel (auto pilot) and our path straightened out to a chalk line..
Big day tomorrow..  lets hope for no big blisters on the hull

Wish I Was SomeWhere Other Than Here

2nd place that is!!!   Ha…   We had an AWESOME race this weekend…   St. Clair River Race..

Start in the lake, and race down the RIVER to St. Clair Michigan..

I know I know.. I’m never doing ANYTHING in the videos.. but we actually did 15 or so Gybes (kinda tricky stuff, for us anyway)… and me arms were silly puddy da next day…  Great Crew!!

we have some solid competition to figure out before the Mac race…

First place LIBERTY made some mistakes.. apparently we made a few more!!

You might notice a few cut (replaced on the fly) lines at the end of the race..  we certainly had an interesting day, and I found my pocket knife, black tape, and pliers came in handy too many times!! ha   Nice recovery Ambush!

Lots of learning by all, some serious malfunctions were corrected on the fly, so nice to do at daylight with lots of crew awake!..   Mackinac is calling soon..

Next Race is an overnighter to test crew shifts and see how we deal with problems in the NIGHT..

Stay Tuned !!!

Mackinac Race 2012

Mackinac race is approaching soon….  July 20th I believe…

Here’s a wee video of our race? last year…   we had some fun when the wind died in the middle of the lake.. and there wasn’t much to do but make new songs..

We were in 3rd place the second day out.. but took a wrong turn in Albuquerque… where the wind disappeared!!     Great Time, with a green crew..   Does that make us a yellow crew now?

Timbo Tech – Turbo Props

Island Dancer was found to have Turbo Props
with Variable pitch..  What the heck is that you say?  Or.. perhaps..
who cares Timbo.. im going to get another coffee…

Either way.. have a quick look at the
video..  kinda neat stuff.

So what is it.. and why does it matter…

When in forward, a propeller is designed to
give maximum thrust  and efficiency at a certain RPM…

Thats cool.. but what about backing out of
the slip….

Guess what, the prop is designed to go only one
way..  if you run it backwards it works….but not so good.  (This is a great excuse for anyone thats hit anything in reverse!!)

I’ve always said the boat ramp is the best
entertainment around…  Normally this involves cars that are proven to
Float (for a short time)…  but many times its boats crashing into other
boats, piers, or Lochness monsters.

Bring on turbo props..  they switch
position when in reverse to give maximum effiicency.. and MAYBE keep you from
hitting that maga-yacht sitting behind you..

Here’s a quick video to make you SMRT

Moving Day

Last Day at our House in Brights Grove..   This picture was taken 1 minute before we left.

It was a huge job to get everything cleaned out of the house, and stored at many friends homes!
Thanks so much to the many people that came over and helped pack up.. would have taken many more days without you all.
Drove to Nova Scotia, staying at our friends beautiful home in Pleasantville..   View is absolutely beautiful!!  Having fun here and finally slowing down after big move!!

New Mechanic on Board

I guess you can’t do everything yourself….
Timbo broke down and let another mechanic touch Island Dancer..
Fuel injectors on diesel engines need to be cleaned periodically.. apparently these are way overdue
One of the engines has produced black smoke, indicating a fuel air mixture issue..
Since I hired a mechanic, and she fits into small places.. why not do both engines!!!
They were very dirty and its hard to believe they worked at all.
Puerto Rico is a great location for these jobs.
Once removed, we dropped them off at High Power Diesel Fuel Injection Specialist..
Injector tips will be replaced, bench tested for spray pattern, and opening pressure reset.
If this doesnt fix the problem, we will move to the injector pump.. Good thing my mechanic works for Ice Cream !!

Two Anchor’s One Chain

Well, It might be all those years of university…but Im thinkin the second anchor is not a lot of use without a chain.. hummmmm…

West Marine has chain.. Looking online, it appears to be close to $7.00 a foot.. X 300 feet…. Geeze thats 2 marine units!!! (Because everything is expensive on a boat, everyone equates $1000 to 1 marine unit… seriously nothing seems to be less than a marine unit!!!!)

Anyway.. chitchatting with the local guru’s..  its a short walk from Island Dancer is the main Chain and Rope/Tackle shop in all of Puerto Rico.. Sweet!
First day we walked over… Robin wearing a sun dress.. both of us in flip-flops.. we’re instructed to walk through the shop to see their chain selection..
Tons of guys grinding links, using high pressure hydraulics to join steel lines for the cruise ships.. And I have sunglasses, flip-flops and a starbucks (don’t ask)
So of course I didn’t go into the shop… Ask any of the workers 🙂 .. They saw Robins skirt, but Timbo… no, he wasn’t there..

Anyway, after we determined there are 2 types of 3/8 galvanized chain, they gave me 2 lengths of samples to take back to the boat to check in the windlass (electric winch).
Funny, when we walk down the road, the truck drivers always honk their horn at us and wave or whistle.. especially when Robin is with me (But not always!!! ha)

.. But this time, walking swinging two lengths of chain, not a beep!!!  🙂
So.. regrouping (aka the next day).. we go back to the shop to pickup 250′ of 3/8″ G4 Galvanized chain.. They have to order it… 2 weeks.. OMG.. they said they had it in stock when I called 2 months ago!!! – Enter Robin advice to Timbo here…  Bleep Bleep Bleeeeep
Well we had them measure what they did have.. 155’… humm.. well, we could always add line to that.. So we did..
155′ of chain, 100′ of 5/8″ Nylon.. Had them do the connections… remember they do the cruise ships.. humm.. no time to practice.. (Ray can check their work next month!)..
Price .75 Marine units DELIVERED… Awesome!!!
Now, to mark the chain/rope.. Came up with a good system to designate the lengths.. (when you put the anchor out you usually use 5x the depth for length of rode)… So its nice to know how much chain is out..
Using 15 minute dry, rust resistant, thick as goop, Black brush on paint.. I finished the job.. 16 minutes later it started raining!!! ha..
Today, the chain is dry.. and its time to install.. A few hundred pounds, so were going to use the windlass to pull the chain onboard… Robin is shopping, Allie is diving… So Timbo had to put his coffee down and use both hands… Went really smooth… and Now we have 2 anchors, both connected to Island Dancer!!!!
Have a great Weekend.. Were hoping to set sail mid next week.. Stay Tuned!!
