So, still struggling with the battery charger onboard.. Pulled up to a dock yesterday to try AC power.. no different…
Certainly a circuit board gone on that baby…always blame electrical, never mechanical…
Finished the water maker filter changeout.. that isn’t working correctly either… hummmm… 2 strikes!
If it starts snowing Im going to loose it!! ha!..
Good news? Well, free internet, so found a place that fix’s this stuff..
Being electronics I assumed it would need a dumpster and a credit card to buy a new one..
Shop over in Nanny Cay, seemed pretty good.. They said don’t throw it away.. the new ones are not repairable, the one you have is.. and we stock most everything for it..
Hummm… how about water maker fixers?? Same building, different guy.. Told him what it was doing.. he said.. YUP,see that all the time.. I can look at it tomorrow..
Going for a small sail over to their marina/shop today.. Hopefully we get these two things figured out soon… Then we can relax… ha.. sure!!!
Sitting on Island Dancer this morning, googling repair shops.. I glanced at a building I’ve seen 100 times.. But never really looked at it I guess!!!
There’s a Palm Tree Growing out it’s ROOF… They painted a tarp pink and duck taped it around the tree..
When the wind blows, their seal allows the tree to move and keeps water (most of it!) out of the business.. Awesome!!
Have a Great Day!!
Well the shutdown on Island Dancer starts after this coffee.. Quick pitstop to pull the water maker and charging system off.
Determined the motor, relief valve, and control panel are not working correctly on the water maker.
So fortunate the previous owners have purchased many spares and left these onboard. I think I have 3 replacement boards?
Plan yesterday was to sail to Nanny Cay, where Cay Electronics is located. This part was easy.. Pulling up to the break wall we radioed in for a slip assignment.
No Dice.. The Carib 1500 rally arrived today.. this is 100’s of boats than sail down the east coast to of all places Nanny Cay.. ha! (1500 miles!)
Its an annual event to get everyone down to the cruising ground for high season.. They had a ton of tents setup on the beach, looked a heck of a lot like Mackinac!!!
So.. plan B.. Next port is Road Town.. This is the major town of Tortola and only a few minutes by car away from Nanny Cay..
Docked Up.. clicked on the AC and walked to town to see about getting the cell phone working again. Were too far away from USA now to pick up our old carrier..
As we entered the main street, we could turn left or right. hummm.. lets try right.. 3 stores down the road was DigiCel.. The only provider (apparently the best!! ha) on the island.
New $10 sim card, and our plan is actually cheaper here than in the US.. new phone number…
284-340-4414 Give us a call sometime!
Dinner was breakfast.. it was AMAZING..
Internet here is faster than Cogeco at home.. so Robin is getting a lot of work done.. Allie and Timbo are in the engine room today..
We will likely drop the key components off, then sail around some small islands until everything is ready for re-install..
But of course, we can’t plan any more than a few hours ahead it seems!! ha
Whats that saying.. A Cruisers plan is etched in the sand at low tide…
Have a Great Day !!!
Successful Maintenance day aboard Island Dancer..
Allie didn’t skin too many knuckles getting the water maker out…
And Timbo didn’t electrocute himself taking the charger/inverter out!!
Jumper’d the shore power to house outlets, and we’ve got A/C and flushing crappers! Amazing!!!
I must say that grade 10 electrical course has come in way too handy on these boats!! Thanks Mr. Harding (I think!) ha!!!
Went for a nice walk over to Sunsail and the Moorings charter place.. Walked around like we were tourists, no one cares..
They have about 1000 boats for charter.. Cool place to stroll around with a $1.25 beer from their grocery store!!! 🙂
This is where Allie took her 3 week scuba trip last year.. so she was showing us all around the marina.. too funny…
Today we should find out if the charger is repairable.. The water maker will be a week or more, so we will just come back for that later..
Job descriptions today:
Allie – Student – Get your homework done.. and get that grease from under your fingernails!!
Robin – MSDS Request – Loves the high speed internet here.. working pretty hard now so we can slack off soon..
Timbo – Pipefitter…. Moving the BBQ to the other rail of the boat, and installing a line to the twin propane tanks..
Right now we are using those crazy little green bottles..
Found a BRITISH booze and FOOD store.. (Thats the actual name) They sell HP BBQ sauce…. that’s impossible to get in the USA.. Had to stock up!!
Finished the day with Timbo making an awesome Italian Dinner, served in the cockpit.. A Jazz band started at the end of the dock restaurant, and played for 2 hours.
Allie took a tip to the band saying we were enjoying their music on our sailboat.. Couldn’t be better!!!
This morning, Robin and I have already been for an hour SUP ride around the marinas… some very large boats here.. Lots of interesting things to check out…
Planning a hike to the other end of the harbour today.. there’s a dolphin discovery there.. better not let Allie see that, she will open the gates and let them free!!!
Have a Great Day !!!
The Price is Right (or.. The Price is Expensive??) You decide!!!
Dropping the dock lines this morning, and heading over to Trellis Bay… Home to our little Nonsuch sailboat.
We have a mooring ball there, which Im not sure is at the bottom of the bay for off season. Likely anchor there and dive the ground tackle for an inspection.
Our water maker is making good progress, installing manual switch’s for each of the pumps, in place of the computer board.. This will make it a manual operation to start/stop, but very reliable!
Charger/Inverter on the other hand is making no progress. Apparently they are too busy to even look at it until next week… Hummm different story than I was told when I dropped it off!…
Oh well.. I picked up a Canadian Tire 10amp little charger and have been trickle charging the house batteries while on the dock..
Every Full Moon, there is a celebration in Trellis Bay.. We never seem to be in the area so making an effort to get there today. The Full Moon is Sunday and in high season the bay fills up with 100’s of boats, so we want to be there early just in case.
Not sure what there will be of any internet… I will rewire my long range wifi extender for 12v… right now it’s 110, and we won’t have that without running the generator on the hook (No Inverter with Charger out of the boat).
Beautiful Sunrise.. Time to cast off

Made a quick journey over to Trellis Bay, BVI’s. Arriving we had a little trouble finding ‘our’ private mooring… So we anchored where I figured it might be..
Robin quickly bet 500 boat dollars, that a huge trawler was on our mooring.. No way!!!
Doing some diving we soon discovered,.,,, Sure is.. a HUGE trawler.. and our old Dinghy (that I tried to throw away last year).. is tied to it also..
So the fun begins.. The owner of the boat moved away a few years ago.. Let someone stay on it if they paid the mooring.. Apparently they decided it was cheaper to move it onto ours.. but thats speculation at this point!!! Spending the day today trying to find out who can move the thing.. Guy Parker wanted to buy it when he was down last year… Jump on a plane Parker.. Price is RIGHT !!!
Full Moon Party last night.. Literally 100’s of boats came into the harbour… It was like March 24 at the campground with people arriving every few minutes.. cranking the tunes and partying!
The sky was bright… with not only the Full moon, but also huge fires that are lite on the water inside of large steel structures of ‘art!’
Good time by all… MobeJumpers were there…. these are people that travel the islands and dance on stilts.. pretty interesting! Couple bands and Dj’s… music all down the beach..
Called it a night and motored the dingy back to Island Dancer.. As I took one step onto the back swim platform, I knew something was wrong… very wrong!
The anchor has just at that VERY moment broke loose from its holding.. we were heading very quickly for a bunch of boats and the beach!!
It was weird the timing!!.. Fired up the engines.. motored back up to where we started, and dropped both anchors..
We had dove the anchor earlier in the day and it was set well.. So we learned, if you have 2 anchors, why not set em both!.. Lucky eh!!! (Found out later 4 boats dragged this week due to the winds)
Internet doesn’t exist in the bay this year.. Hopefully a restaurant on shore hooks some up soon. Using my long range antenna Im picking up a weak signal in Marina Cay, about 2 miles away..
So its a little slloooww…… I mentioned it was much like Dial Up internet.. Allie looked at me with a weird look… Dial Up???
Remember when only about 10 people in town could use the internet at one time!!! what a change eh!!!
Well better go find my mooring stealer!!!
Couple presents found on shore….
First an outfit for Captain Ryan to wear when he comes down on his sailboat this March !!! … Second…Chris Steele may be interested in the sunken runabout… you can get it running!! (and Floating!)
Have a Great Day
Woke up yesterday to NO WIND… that’s extremely strange down here.. its always blowing 10 knots minimum…
Boats were every direction in the harbour.. a few of them rubbin up to each other!!
Took the Stand up boards out for a run… floated over 2 stingrays that were sleeping.. they woke up and took off in a flash!..
Immigration/Customs are surprisingly very friendly!!! Even when you have over stayed your welcome!
We initially just checked into the country for 7 days.. Assuming we would need to get back to USVI to get a new charger…
Still don’t have a charger, but we are certainly over the 7 days.. Walked over to the airport last night with our paperwork.. Talked to Immigration and they said.. No problem.. but we can’t do it here.. you have to go to Road town… and they close in 10 minutes…
Next day..(Fully over our welcome allowance) we ask about a cab to road town. cheaper to rent a car… Sweet! sounds like we need to make an adventure of the day…
The rental was a Japanese Who Knows what.. Foot to the floor going up hills was the only way…
The transmission is sure to fail soon..But it got us ALL THE WAY around the island!!!
Whooo All 21 Square miles of her!!!… Took the entire day… I think its 400 square miles up and down…ha!!!
Over to Road town, we went to the ferry dock, customs place.. Nice people, but wrong place.. need to go to HEAD OFFICE..
Over to where they said… “Marriages, Births, and Deaths” place.. Since we didn’t need any of those, they sent us down a small gravel/dirt alley way…
to… eventually…. the right place…
About 10 people or so sitting down waiting.. The “wait your number machine” was at 21 when I took ticket 25… Allie asked “What ticket did you get Dad”.. I said 47…
Her jaw dropped as the guy sitting beside me looking at my ticket started laughing,, as did a few others… what fun we have with young Allie!!!
$30 later were good to stay another month… Funny we ran into so many people we know already.. Two at immigration… 1 at the ferry dock..
Waitress from our mid day snack was walking her dog as we got back.. she waved knowing exactly who we were… ha!!! Cycle is repeating itself..
Small Island.. make friends in a hurry…
Running the ridge line of the mountains (big hills?) we had spectacular views all day..
Over to Bomba’s famous surf shack… You can’t get there by boat.. and its a must do!
They were extending the deck when Guy and I leaned on the boards to keep them somewhat upright as they drilled the thru holes..
Amazing.. it seemed to work out Guy!!! ha!!!On a bit of a mission to find Ryans new boat on this island.. People have been using it this week.. it came back to the dock today and we found her !!! Some pics attached!
Then walked back with a beer to the dock as Allie picked me up in the dingy… like clockworkWhat a great day! Full chicken n spices in the pressure cooker tonight.. Another New recipe… Smells AWESOME!!! And it takes 17 minutes to cook!! (But an hour by the time you do all the fixin’s)
Have a Great Day
Enjoying our new neighbourhood this week in Trellis Bay, BVI
Borrowed an Island car yesterday to pickup our charger/inverter on the other side of the island..
Our new friends Kim and Kary are super nice people.. Kim broke her ankle a couple weeks ago, and hasn’t been off the boat…
We took her out for a spin in the island car… Had lots of fun!
So here’s how you drive the car..
First off find it.. could be anywhere on Beef island.. They just park it where ever… – CHECK
Keys are interesting… 2 are broken off so they are just 1″ long… 1 key is full length.. Use this one to open the door – CHECK
Be sure there are no cats in the car.. If Kary forgot to close the window, there will be some sleeping in it – CHECK
Climb over back seat, find white cord.. pull.. this release’s the back hatch so you can put your gear in – CHECK
Seats don’t move, and are set to the farthest back position.. so sit forward on the seat to reach the clutch.. – CHECK
Take off your Sandals – Discovered the hard way.. your feet will slip off the clutch.. barefoot is the island way – CHECK
Drivers window doesn’t go down, so crank down the others – A/C doesn’t work – CHECK
Insert key… no not the long one.. the broken off one.. Clutch in – CHECK
Speedometer will go up to 100 mph when the motor starts.. thats OK – CHECK
THINK LEFT… Drive on the Left TIMBO..
Don’t Point at anything.. Drive as fast as you can.. If they figure out you are a tourist they will honk and pass you.. – CHECK
The roads here go straight UP and straight DOWN.. if its raining some are impassable.. Pretty Cool!!!
Kary picks SourSop leaves for people all around the world.. Its a plant that grows down here and apparently cures a lot of health issues.
He flys a plane and uses his frequent trips to the USVI to mail them out. We went on a picking day with him, which was fun!
Here’s his website.. pretty interesting story.. have a look
Hooking up the charger today, then we are planning to go for a sail tomorrow.. Where.. hummmm… not sure… about 60 islands to pic from.. so who knows!!!
Have a Great Day
